Environment setup:

What is geotagging?

Geotagging is the process of adding precise global positioning data. The specific latitude and longitude can be added to a website or image found online. Geotagging helps the search engines make the connection between your content (photo) and the location of what the user is trying to find. For example, if you are searching for a restaurant near you on your mobile and you are in Warsaw you won’t be presented with restaurants from London in your search results.

In a business environment – if someone is searching for a particular service in the area, geotagging will help to deliver relevant information about near locations with such services.

Geotagging a picture

  • Go to Geoimgr website.
  • Start with uploading a picture you want to geotag (click on the big blue button)
  • Once you upload your photo you should focus on choosing a relevant location for the picture (your business/place location). You can use the provided map (1) or type in coordinates below (2).

Set a location using the map

  • While using a map, simply navigate on it with your mouse cursor and use the mouse scroll to zoom in and out. Click on a desert place to place a pin.
  • When you place the pin you should see that “Latitude” and “Longitude” values will appear – those are coordinates on the map for the place you selected.

Set a location using latitude and longitude.

  • If you want to pin your location using the exact address, you should go to Google maps
  • Then, here you should type in your desired address:
  • Simply start typing your location till it will be displayed on the list and click on it.
  • The pin on google maps will be placed on the address you choose.
  • Right-click on the pin and you can find your latitude and longitude.
  • Now you can add your coordinates underneath the map Geoimgr tool website and the pin will we placed in that location.
  • Once you set your location for the picture you should focus on putting “Document Name” and adding “Image Description”.
  • For this SOP I took a beautiful picture of my backyard after a snowy day, so let us assume that I have a holiday resort for stay during the winter season.

Document Name” should shortly represent your business or service intent, while “Image Description” should represent a phrase that potential audience will type in while searching for a place on Google etc. “Image Description” it’s a kind of keyword to find your picture on the web.
You should check our SOP about keywords to get more information on that matter.

  • Click on the “Write EXIF Tags” button.
  • The coordinates you put in an earlier step will change to Geotag data.
  • Now “Download” your picture.

To show you how adding a geotag changed our picture we will show you its properties before and after Geotagging. (You should check those properties in “Details” tab)
