Environment setup:
- We recommend that you use Google Chrome browser to navigate the web.
- Administrator access to your WordPress website,
- Access to Google Search Console tool.
Checking your sitemap using Yoast SEO Plugin
- βLog Inβ to your WordPress Admin Panel.
- Choose βSEOβ on the left side menu.
- Then choose βGeneralβ.
- Choose the βFeaturesβ tab in Yoast Settings.
- Make sure that βXML sitemapsβ feature is enabled (if itβs not, turn it on).
- Click on βQuestion markβ.
- Then click on βSee the XML Sitemapβ.
- You should be redirected to your sitemap URL.
- There you can see your βsitemap_index.xmlβ file that is automatically created by Yoast
Adding a sitemap to Google Search Console
- Go to βyourdomainname.com/sitemap_index.xml.
- Copy part of a web address after βyourdomainname.com/β. This is your sitemap URL.
- Go to βsearch.google.com/search-consoleβ.
- Click on βStart nowβ.
- Sign in with the Google Account you used to enable GSC for your website.
- In the Google Search Console tool click on βSitemapsβ.
- Paste your sitemap URL.
- Then click on βSUBMITβ.
- Wait a moment for the process to finish.
- Now you should be able to see a confirmation message. Click on βGOT ITβ.
- In most cases, after submitting a sitemap you will see Status: βCouldnβt fetchβ.
- You just need to refresh the page. Simply press βF5β on your keyboard.
