 Let’s get started, in 10 minutes you’ll be ready to measure your audience.

Environment setup:

  • We recommend that you use the Google Chrome browser to navigate the web.
  • Administrator access to your Google Tag Manager Account,
  • A Google Account (Gmail, G-Suite).

What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and measures website traffic and allows you to visualize report it in a very legible way.

Setting Up Google Analytics – Universal Analytics

Create a Google Analytics Account

  • First, go to the Google Analytics website.
  • You should sign in with the same Google Account of your Google Tag Manager account,
  • Click on β€œSet up for free” and on the next page, you will start creating your account.
  • You have to name your account – We recommend you to put the name of your website so you can easily recognize it.
  • You should check all boxes in the β€œAccount Data Sharing Setting”.
  • Press on β€œNext” and choose β€œWeb” – you are going to measure traffic on the website.
  • Press β€œNext”.
  • Now type your website name.
  • Enter your website URL and choose β€œhttp://” or β€œhttps://” in a dropdown menu.

Check if you should choose HTTP:// or HTTPS://

Enter your website URL in your internet browser, then click just on the left side of the URL Adress Bar and check if it is secured or not. In some cases, there will be a red padlock (not secure) or a green one (secure).

If it is secured choose https:// if not – http://

If your website is not HTTPS we highly recommend you make the switch ASAP as it’s an important SEO Ranking Factory, we’ll soon release an SOP to explain how to get a free SSL certificate (to move your site to HTTPS) using Cloudflare.

  • Select the β€œIndustry Category” of your website.
  • Choose the β€œReporting Time Zone” – in most cases, it will be your time zone, but if your target audience is in another time zone, choose accordingly.
  • Click β€œCreate”.
  • Read Google Analytics Terms of Service Agreement.
  • Click β€œI Accept”.
  • Then you should be able to see the β€œSuccess” message.
  • Now you should see your Google Analytics β€œAdmin” Area (1). Here you can see your Google Analytics β€œTracking ID” (2) – Copy it or write it down. There is also a code for your website (4). In case you close it, you can revisit that page by clicking on the β€œTracking Code” (3) under the β€œTracking info” section.

Set Up Google Analytics using Google Tag Manager

  • Go to Google Tag Manager, sign in, and choose your account.
  • On the left side of the screen click on β€œTags”.
  • Create a new tag by clicking on β€œNew”.
  • Start off with naming your tag (It should be something descriptive so you will know what tag it is, for example, β€œYourwebsitename analytics”).
  • Then press on β€œTag Configuration”.
  • Choose β€œGoogle Analytics: Universal Analytics”
  • As you can see β€œTrack Type” is set to β€œPage View”, you should leave it like that.
  • Click on β€œGoogle Analytics Settings” and then β€œNew Variable”.
  • Start off with naming a new variable.
  • Now go to your Google Analytics β€œAdmin” Panel (Open it in a new tab of the Internet browser). Go to analytics.google.com.
  • Sign In with your Google account.
  • Then click on β€œAdmin” on the left side of the screen.
  • Then click on β€œTracking Info”.
  • And then on β€œTracking Code”.
  • In the upper left corner, you should see β€œTracking ID”. Copy it.
  • Go back to Google Tag Manager and then paste it in the β€œTracking ID” box.
  • Finally, click on β€œSave”.
  • Click on β€œTriggering”.
  • Choose the β€œAll Pages” trigger.
  • Review your settings…
  • … and click β€œSave”.
  • Now go to β€œOverview” on the left side of Google Tag Manager.
  • You should see your β€œTag” and β€œVariable” last edited β€œa few seconds ago”.
  • Click on the β€œSubmit” on the upper right side.
  • Add a descriptive name under β€œVersion Name” (1) and add a detailed description under β€œVersion Description” (2) so you can always recall what you have added to Tag Manager.
  • Finally, click on β€œPublish”.
  • Wait for a couple of seconds or sing as google tells you.
  • Then you will be presented with a summary of your new tag.

Check if Google Analytics is running correctly.

  • First, go to your website and leave it open in one tab of your browser.
  • Open the Google Analytics website in another tab.
  • In Google Analytics go to β€œHome”.
  • If everything is set right, you should see at least one active user right now ( it is you).

Setting Up Google Analytics – Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Creating a Google Analytics account

  • First, go to the Google Analytics website.
  • You should sign in with the same Google Account as your Google Tag Manager account
  • Click on β€œStart measuring”.
  • Name your account (1) and click on β€œNext”(2)
  • Create your Property name(1), set the reporting time zone(2), choose the currency of your report(3) and click on β€œNext”(4).
  • Select your business category from the list.
  • Set your business size(1) and check how do you intend to use Google Analytics with your Business(2).
  • Click on β€œCreate”.
  • Accept Google Analytics Terms of Service.
  • You will be redirected to your Google Analytics main panel, click on β€œData Streams” on your property.
  • Choose β€œWeb”.
  • Choose the correct prefix for your website URL from the dropdown list.

Check if you should choose HTTP:// or HTTPS://

  • Enter your website URL(1) and name your stream(2).
  • Click on β€œCreate stream”.

Make Sure that ENHANCED MEASUREMENT is enabled

When you create a web data stream in Google Analytics 4, you have an option to

enable/disable Enhanced Measurement. It is designed to help marketers get as

many events in the reports as possible without the need to cooperate with

developers or configure them in Google Tag Manager.

  • Your stream is ready, now copy the Measurement ID – you will need it to configure Google Analytics using Google Tag Manager.

Set Up Google Analytics using Google Tag Manager

  • Go to Google Tag Manager, sign in, and choose your account.
  • Choose β€œAdd a new tag”.
  • Start off with naming your tag (It should be something descriptive so you will know what tag it is, for example, β€œYourwebsitename analytics”).
  • Then press on β€œTag Configuration”.
  • Choose β€œGoogle Analytics: GA4 Configuration”
  • Fill in with your Measurement ID from Google Analytics (GA4).
  • Now, press on β€œTriggering”.
  • Select β€œAll Pages”(1) and click on β€œAdd”(2).
  • Click on β€œSave”.
  • You will see that you just make some Workspace Changes, click on β€œPreview”.

PREVIEW IS REQUIRED FOR GA4 TO PROPERLY COLLECT DATA FROM YOUR WEBSITE

  • Enter your website URL and click on β€œConnect”.
  • Google Tag Manager’s assistant will open your website, and click on β€œFinish”.
  • Click on β€œContinue”.
  • Click on β€œSubmit”.
  • Click on β€œPublish”.
  • You will be presented with a summary, select β€œPublish” once more, but this time from the dropdown menu.

Check if Google Analytics is running correctly.

  • First, go to your website and leave it open in one tab of your browser.
  • Open the Google Analytics website in another tab.
  • In Google Analytics go to β€œReports”.
  • If everything is set right, you should see at least one active user right now ( it is you).

This is it! You just finished setting up Google Analytics on your website
and now you can track and measure traffic from your website!
